Review Our Last Tango

Our Last Tango (Un tango más) is a documentary following the life and artistic career of the two most famous tango dancers of all times Juan Carlos Copes and Maria Nieves Rego  a documentary full of love, passion and hate, the same words were used by Maria Nieves Rego to describe what tango meant for her. In the film we see the couple that brought tango from being merely a “diversion of the poor people” in Buenos Aires clubs to a world audience, sharing their story of what went on behind the curtains: heart ache, sacrifices, motivation and unstoppable passion. Read Monica Fuentes Review of Our Last Tango directed by German Kral and produced by Win Wenders.

Review Our Last Tango

The documentary has beautiful choreography, accompanied by harmonious warm colours which supports the story and helps to communicate the strength of the passion that Maria and Juan had for tango.

Our Last Tango is made up of interviews and stories told by the main characters themselves, including photos and archive footage from their most spectacular shows and recreated scenes from the most important moments in their lives, allowing the director to construct the perfect atmosphere to tell the story. The viewer gets a chance to get back to 1960’s and see how this couple took over the world just with the help of tango

The narrative focuses on Maria’s story –  full of love, passion, longing and resilience tango takes her on an incredible journey.  The connection between Maria and Juan Carlos is felt instantly – from the first time they look into eachothers eyes to what may be their last tango on the stage where they have danced so many times together before, even after all of these years tango is still a burning passion. Even though Maria never had a dance lesson her success in dance and especially tango was mesmerizing. The explanations is very simple by Maria herself: “The first time I danced the tango, it entered my skin through my feet, passed from my skin to my blood and through my blood to my heart. It requires no acrobatics, you simply have to devote yourself to your heartbeat.”

Maria and Juan spent years and years devoted to the dance of love, perfecting it to the very last details and sharing it with the world! The film really explores tango from the people that made it what it is today.
