A moment from the Danish psychological thriller The Exception

Based on the best seller by Christian Jungersen comes a Danish psychological thriller “The Exception” starring  Amanda Collin (Raised by Wolves), Sidse Babett Knudsen (Borgen and Westworld), Lene Maria Christensen (Terribly Happy and The Legacy) and Danica Curcic (The Mist and Silent Heart) and directed by Jesper W. Nielsen who has received multiple awards from his previous work. The book has been sold in hundredths of thousand of copies, reviewed by New York Time and published in 20 countries worldwide, no surprise the story has made its way to the big screen.

Set in a small research centre for genocide in Copenhagen the story follows four colleagues Iben, Malene, Anne-Lise and Camilla. Work full of various power stuggles, alliances and whispers not to mention each women is dealing with their own personal issues making it, at times, not the happiest place to be or work in. However when two of them receive death threats the search for the suspect begins. And even though the initial thoughts lead to a Serbian war criminal, the further investigation unveils something nobody was expecting.

With each minute that passes, the slick Danish psychological thriller reveals more an more information allowing the viewer, just like the characters on screen, to put the puzzle together and figure out all the ins and out of the unwanted death threats. Not to mention it provides some background story for each characters, which makes it easier to understand certain decisions each of the women made. It nicely captures that at times the real enemies can be find closer than you would think. Inevitably you are constantly guessing who is responsible for all of this. The movie has an interesting approach with strong characters exploring what humans are capable of when fuelled by strong emotions.
